Transcription is the process of synthesis of RNA from DNA. In this process, only one strand of DNA is copied and converted into RNA strand. The strand of DNA utilized for synthesis of RNA is called as template strand. The RNA molecule produce is single stranded messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Small segments of DNA are transcribed into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. The mRNA produced by transcription carries the information required for protein synthesis. Therefore, transcription is a step in the process of protein synthesis.
