x + y = 48
x/3 - y/6 = 5
multiply 2nd equation by 3
x - y/2 = 15
subtract this from first eqution:-
y - (-y/2) = 33
3y/2 = 33
x = 66/3 = 22
and x = 48 - 22 = 26
so the smaller number is 22
