Where do these words appear? “Ladies and children not admitted”

The men folk like not having woman and children to listen too, and hope that this means that the show will have bawdy (adult) entertainment

These words could appear in any public place like a bar, theater, or event hall in the past. But, if you are referring to "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", the words "Ladies and children not admitted" are on the door of the courthouse. There is a showing of a "thrilling tradgedy." It is thought that these words would bring in a bigger audience because the men will not want to deal with women or children.
