In the use of nuclear reactors for power generation, a little mass of fissionable material can be used for a very long time as nuclear fuel unlike in fossil fuel powered generation plants where there is urgent need for a constant supply of fuel.

Secondly, nuclear reactors produce million times more energy than fossil fuel power generators. Hence, more energy is obtainable from a nuclear reactor than from a fossil fuel power generation plant.

Lastly, the use of fossil fuels in power generation lead to the emission of gases into the atmosphere which lead to acid rain and global warming. Such gases include COx, NOx and SOx. This is not observed when nuclear reactors are in use.
