He disguised himself as a beggar and did not reveal his true self so that he could understand what all has happened while he was away.

Answer:

Upon waking up in Ithaca, having been favored by the Phaeacians, Odysseus actually believes, in anger and confusion, that he has been tricked somehow by them. However, this proves to be wrong and, as he learns that he is actually in Ithaca, magically disguised as a beggar by Athena, he searches for his loyal servant in order to discover what has become of his home and his wife.
