The Earth spins about its axis and makes one complete revolution in approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds. This is the approximate period of time (24 hours) that we call a day. This means that a given point upon the Earth close to the equator will experience, on average, 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
