The standard look of quadratic equation:
ax^2+bx+c=0
Vieta's Formula says that
x_1+x_2=-b

So by knowing that
b=5 we know that the sum of the roots in this equation is -5.

2x^2 + 5x - 3 = 0
(x + 3)(2x - 1) = 0
x = -3, x = 1/2
Sum of the roots: -3 + (1/2) = - 2 1/2
