The nations never directly confronted each other on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years.
" War of words and threats" between the US and USSR from 1945-1990. It was a political and economic stuggle between these nations.

The soviet union tried to bring communism into the eastern europe by conquering it. Hope that helps.
