k, so it can be
(-17-u)/3=-2 or
-17-(u/3)=-2

if it is the first one then
times 3 both sides
-17-u=-6
add 17 to both sides
-u=11
times -1
u=-11

if it is the 2nd one (-17-(u/3))=-2)
add 17 to both sides
-u/3=15
times -3 both sides
u=-45

if it is (-17-u)/3=-2 then u=-11
if it is -17-(u/3)=-2 then u=-45

What is u in this equation means: solve for u

-17- (u)/(3) =-2\\~\\-17- (u)/(3)+17 =-2+17\\~\\- (u)/(3) =15\\~\\- (u)/(3)*-3 =15*-3\\~\\u=-45

Done :)
