Truman believed South Korea was a small country, unable to defend itself against an enemy supported by the Soviet Union or Communist China, and failure to defend South Korea would send a signal to other nations that the U.S. would not help defend their freedom!

I hope this helps!

Truman believed in the Domino Theory which meant that if one country fail to Communism, the others would soon fall. So it was better to try to contain Communism first at China (which failed), and then at Korea (successful) and Vietnam (failed). There were other ways America and the USSR tried to get countries to be on their sides

hope this helps
