How does the desirable traits in natural selection are passed along

The animals and plants that do not get the trait will most likely die because of inability to adapt. This means that the ones with the trait will then create more and pass along the trait. Slowly, the ones without the trait will completely die off and the ones with with the trait will keep passing it on.
