What’s Wrong with What We Eat?

1. According to Mark Bittman, how is livestock harming the planet? Name three ways.

Livestock overeats and tramples the land, often kicking up to much dust and sediment or causing the delay or lack of growth of grass and other vegetation.

Livestock also needs a lot of room, leading to deforestation to get it.

They also produce high levels of methane.

2. Besides junk food, what else does the speaker say Americans are overconsuming?

Beef

3. What type of food does Bittman say will make you live longer?

Vegetables, fruits

4. Do you agree with the speaker when he says marketers are to blame for our overconsumption of white bread and Coke? Explain your answer.

Yes, partially. A large percentage of food adds are junk foods including coke and white bread. Sometimes even the two side by side.

5. What is a locavore? What is Bittman’s opinion of the locavore lifestyle?

Lavacores are people who only eat locally grown foods, though Bittman agrees they are elitists, he also believes they are not solving anything by eating only locally grown foods.

6. According to the speaker, what happened to home cooking when women entered the workforce?

It declined, now with men and women working- a majority of parents are too tired after a long day of work to come home and cook. Simply finding it easier to pick up fast food that is already prepared for them.

7. Experts concerned with disease reduction advise people eat how much meat per week? How much do we actually eat?

Recommend adults to eat just over half a pound a week.

The average adult eats around an average of 3.7 pounds per week.

8. Do you agree that Americans eat too much meat? Why or why not?

Statistically, yes. Americans probably do eat too much meat.

However, I also believe it is ok to have an open mind and if that is what the person desires to eat, I have no room to judge. I enjoy eating meat a lot as well. Though I also enjoy vegetables and fruit just as much.

It is harming our planet because it is the “second highest contributors to atmosphere –altering gases”. Livestock is bad for the planet because it is one of the sizable offenders in land degradation. It is bad for the planet because it causes air and water pollution. It is bad for the planet because it also causes water shortages and loss of biodiversity.
