Gideon v. Wainwright ruled that a suspected person has the right to an attorney/lawyer. Miranda v. Arizona ruled that the arrested person must have his/her rights read to him (You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. Etc.). These two cases are intended to help the accused person from self-incrimination.

Gideon vs wainwright ruling was that if you were accused of a crime and you asked for a lawyer one will be provided for you. and the court case Miranda vs Arizona was that you have to know your rights when you are accused of a crime.
