Many women had to leave their homes, from a traditional and very conservative, familiy-centered way of living to join volunteer brigades, as nurses mostly, where their attention had to concentrate in helping men sent to the war. Even more than 400 women decided to make themselves dress as men to fight in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War.
