All that a modern writer would need to do is to adapt the story to a modern reality. There are no powerful kings like in the past anymore, but there are dictators, politicians of many kinds and very influencial presidents. The story could keep the lies, cheats and murders in a scenario that envolves corruption and politics. Maybe the writer will just Use a similar plot, but change the setting to the White House, for example.
