The Apollo program, as well as the entire American space shuttle project, had political motivations. The space industry has remained the culmination of state-of-the-art technologies. It has increased the proximity and mutual dependence between the development of technology in space agencies and research projects in areas of 'terrestrial' application of these technologies, and it is now possible to establish development strategies largely adjusted between the two strands technology transfer programs. Medicine has been, since the beginning of space exploration, one of the great beneficiaries of the technologies developed for launching and operating space missions, most of the time in a perfectly casual way.
The applications of space technology for the safety of the people are still and especially evident in the area of the radars. Not the radars developed to detect aircraft in the air, but those that were initially proposed for a program of exploration of the Moon's subsoil. Recently, the technology derived therefrom was directed, through a technology transfer program of the European space agency (ESA ) for the detection of anti-personnel mines in areas of the planet where the number of victims of these mines is high, the costs of detection and removal as well, and where there was little hope that the situation would change in the near future.
