we can determine the energy (heat) using the following formula

heat= specific heat x mass x ΔT

specific heat (water)= 1.0 cal/ g C
mass= 500 g
ΔT= 10 C

heat= 1.0 x 500 x 10= 5000 calories

energy of content of the food= 5000 cal/ 1.0 g= 5000 cal/ g or 5 Cal/ g
