2x + y = 8
x + 3y = -6

Note: This is the process of elimination

First: Multiply one side by -3 to get rid of your y's.

It should look like:
-3 ( 2x + y) = 8 (-3)

Then it should look like:
-6x - 3y = -24
x + 3y = -6

Go ahead: Get rid of the y's

Your equation should then look like:
-6x = -24
x = -6

Next: You would add x to -6x and subtract -6 from -24.

It should look like:
-5x = -30

Finally: You would get your x alone and divide both sides of your equal sign by -5.

Remember: Negative and a negative makes a positive.

Your answer should be:
x = 6

HOPE THIS HELPS! ^_^
