The option that best describes the difference between highlighting and shading is that highlighting is applied to selected text while shading is applied to an entire paragraph.
So, when you want to highlight a part of a text in Microsoft Word or some other writing program, you should select that text and just highlight it. However, if you want an entire paragraph to be selected, then you are going to shade it, rather than highlight.
