To raise additional money for the school, the pep club decided to open the concession stand during the tournament and sell sandwiches and bottled water. Club members sold the water for $2 a bottle and the sandwiches for $4 each. They sold a total of 390 items. If they raised $1260 from the concession stand, how many sandwiches did they sell?

I used the linear combination method because both equations were in standard form. Before adding the equations together, I multiplied the first equation by –2 to eliminate x.

Once done the answer is 240.

The solution would be like this for this specific problem:

Given: x +y = 390

2x + 4y = 1260

2x+4y=1260 ßdivide by 2

= x+2y=630

x+y=390 ßsubtract

= x+2y-x-y=630-390

y=240

x+240=390

x=390-240=150

So, if they raised $1260 from the concession stand, then they sold 240 sandwiches.
