A conflict is by definition "a clash or struggle between people, ideas, or feelings". In a short story, the conflict is what maintain the interest of the audience. If there weren't conflicts, it would not make sense for the story to be told.

Usually, there are more than one conflict, so we could talk about the main conflict and the secondary conflicts to be developed in a short story.
