1. The population of Gainesville is 4500 in 2000. The population grows by 8% each

year. What was the population of Gainesville in 2015?

2. In 1990, there were 5000 albino tigers in the world. That number is decreasing by 7%
each year. How many albino tigers were there be in 2012?

1: To get the population in the year 2001 we would have to multiply 4500 by 1.08. To get the population in 2002 we would have to multiply: 4500(1.08)(1.08) or 4500(1.08)^2

Therefore you can write the following equation

4500(1.08)ⁿ where n is the number of years

we need is in 2015 and so n=15 so we have

4500(1.08)¹⁵=14274.5 which you should probably round to 14275

The second one is very similar to the first

to get from 1990 to 1991 you would multiply 5000*.93

so our equation would be

5000(.93)ⁿ where n is the number of years

1990-2012 is 22 so we have

5000(.93)²²=1012.96 which rounds to 1013
