Simplifying an algebraic expression means to reduce said expression by grouping terms.

You can only group like terms, in other words, terms whose variables and exponents are the same ( y² and 5y² are like terms because they both have the variable y and the exponent 2. On the other hand y² and 3y³ are not like terms because they have different exponents and therefore you cannot group them).

You have the equation 10x² - y + x².

The like terms in this expression are 10x² and x², to group them we need to sum them up:

10x² + x² = 11x²

The other term is -y but there aren't any other like terms for it so it will remain the same.

Therefore, the expression 10x² - y + x² = 11x² - y
