How did renaissance writers rely on the past to develop new ideas?

The entire concept of the Renaissance was the re-discovery of art and science from the Greeks and Romans (especially the Greeks), so a lot of the writers, scientists, and artists, relied heavily on historic Greek and Roman documents preserved in the Byzantine Empire, as well as by studying Greek and Roman architecture and artifacts.

Hope that helped :)
