The Spanish conquistadors around the 1500's-1600's invaded and pillaged many villages an drew tribes that were thought to be plentiful of gold... the conquistadors had 3 main goals spreading the word of god, gold to make them and Spain rich, and the glory of coming to your country with riches. And that's also what drove a fair few other countries to do the same
