How did the expansion of cotton fields in the Deep South affect young slaves on the eastern shore?

The short answer is they sold slaves into slavery.

Increased importance of cotton strengthened the hold of slavery on the region. Younger slaves could do more work and work longer hours. The South needed more slaves, so it was expected that slaves from the East were sold to southern planters for a hefty price.
