This book is known through its popular name- “Life on the Mississippi”. It is a memoir of Twain's life as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. These are lines from Chapter 5 of the book are evident that the theme of courage rings in the story.

“I should not have had the courage to begin. I supposed that all a pilot had to do was to keep his boat in the river, and I did not consider that that could be much of a trick, since it was so wide.”

The development of courage is again showcased in the pilot-room where it remains steady almost every time. It does eventually reach a satisfactory condition when the apprentice- "standing his own watch"- staggers the weight of several responsibilities that are related with this position.

Therefore, the young narrator presented in this memoir represents the following attribute:

Discouraged thoughts.

"A Cub Pilot" is actually a story that was written by the famous writer Mark Twain. And based on this memoir, I can say that the characteristic of the young narrator here is discouraged thoughts and most especially, having self-doubt. The answer would be the last option. Hope this helps.
