Fractions

We want to know how many cups of pecans she use to decorate one pie. Since she uses 3 cups for 12 pies, if we divide 3 by 12 we will obtain the answer:

(3)/(12)

We want to simplify the fraction. Since

3 ÷ 3 = 1

12 ÷ 3 = 4

we can simplify it dividing both parts of the fraction by 3:

(3)/(12)=(3/3)/(12/3)=(1)/(4)

Answer: D 1/4
