How did Constantine support Christianity?

Christianity now had the support of the government in its spread throughout the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire sometimes tried to use Christianity as a unifying force. They succeeded in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire which had its capital at Constantinople and lasted until 1453, about a thousand years longer than the Empire in the West.
