The colosseum is where the novel hits its climax. In the novel, Winterbourne was compared to the lions used in killing Christian prisoners, as he looked down upon Daisy and Giovanelli.  Historically, the place itself was used to torture Christians and slaves until they meet their end. Also, the “wound” that Daisy received symbolizes her contracting malaria. The circumstances that occurred in the place eventually led to Daisy’s death.
