Many alternative and complementary medicine practices are viewed with skepticism within traditional/mainstream medicine. Why is this the case? What are the advantages and disadvantages to this skepticism?

Modern medicine relies on peer-reviewed and well-tested ideas to develop medicines and means of treatment.  Alternative medicine is often unproven, and cannot be backed by research.
