Given the expression:


5+(-7x)+8y+3y

We can only add the similar terms, in this case they are 8y and 3y. Also remember that if a plus sign is outside of a parenthesis, then the contents of the parenthesis remain with the same sign:


5+(-7x)+8y+3y=5-7x+11y

therefore, the simplified expression is 5-7x+11y
