From the counting principle, we have:

If there are "J" ways to do one thing and "K" ways to do another thing, the number of ways to do "J and K" is found by multiplying J and K.

Thus, we multiply two events when we want the number of ways to get those 2 events.

The statements tells us that we add the two events, which is wrong(!)
