An ionic bond is a bond formed between a metal and a nonmetal atom, which is contrary to a molecular bond which is between nonmetals. Also, in ionic bonds, the atoms do not share electron like in molecular compound but one atom gain and the other lose balance electrons.

In comparison, ionic bonds are way stronger than molecular and they cause the formulation cations and anions (ions that are positive and negative, respectively).
