Let's go through each side of the rectangular prism.

The side facing us:
The side facing us has a width of 2 ft and a height of 8 ft, so multiply:
8 x 2 = 16
Same for the side in the back, so add:
16 + 16 = 32

The side on the right:
The side on the right has a height of 8 ft and a width of 1 ft, so multiply:
8 x 1 = 8
Same for the left side, so add:
8 + 8 = 16

The bottom:
The bottom of the rectangular prism has a width of 2 ft and a height of 1 ft, so multiply:
2 x 1 = 2
Same for the top, so add:
2 + 2 = 4

Then add all of the areas together:
4 + 16 + 32 = 42

The answer is 42.

Hope this helped! If you have anymore questions or don't understand, please comment or DM me. :)
