What factor(s) made it difficult for George Washington to recruit forces for the Continental army?

Adding to what MathKitty said, there was also very little resources and time to train an army

it was thought of as a hopeless fight, since the British had far more advanced military resources, and many did not know how to fight, since many were just farmers.
