When you study the map, you can see that where they were originally going to land, there was poor soil. But, in Plymouth, where they did land, there was better farmland.

So see the little white bubbles pointing to the places. The original Mayflower landing site had bad soil, so they moved to Plymouth where it says there was better farmland. They settled in Plymouth so they could use the better farmland to plant food in so that they could eat.
