Air that travels away from the equator fails to maintain a straight path. The path of the air is deflected to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. The rotation of the Earth on its axis produces the Coriolis Effect. The direction is caused by the direction of the Earth's rotation, think about the rising and setting sun: The sun rises in the east, and sets in the west.
