For each value of x, we will be evaluating the function;

In the first value of x, we have x = -8, and it is < -5, which means that the part of the function we will use is the first one, for x < -5:

k(-8)=15

For the second value of x, we have x = 5, and it is > 1, it is, 1 < x, and for this reason, we will use the last part of the equation, as follows:

\begin{gathered} k(5)=7-(5)/(2) \\ \\ k(5)=(14)/(2)-(5)/(2) \\ \\ k(5)=(14-5)/(2) \\ \\ k(5)=(9)/(2) \end{gathered}
