Adam Smith (1723-1790)

  • Tried to understand the laws of economics using Newton's laws of motion. He is considered the father of the market economy system. He stated that the interactions ocurring in the markets, where many economic agents gathered pursuing their individual interests, led to agreements which generated positive outcomes for all participants and in turn, for the society as a whole.
  • Wrote The Wealth of Nations in 1776, were he connected his defense of free markets with the formultation of strategies aimed to create wealth for the different states.

Voltaire (1694 - 1778)

  • Was a strong advocate of religious tolerance and freedom
  • Wrote the Treaty on Toleration

These two ideas are connected, as in the 'Treatise on Tolerance' he calls for respect between religions and for the separation of church and state. He positions himself against religious fanatism and for the removal of many dogmas based on superstititions.

  • Believed in absolute freedom of speech, and the establishiment of civil rights, like all Enlighment philosophers.
