A ship leaves a port on a bearing of 28º and travels 8.2 mi. The ship then turns due east and travels another 4.3 mi. How far is the ship from the port?

to answer this you would need to draw it out making a triangle ABC. AB being 8.2 and BC being 4.3. you then need to find AC which is where you can do a^2+b^2=c^2. so you plug in what you got 8.2^2+4.3^2=c^2 >>> 67.24+18.49=c^2 >>> 85.73=c^@ >>> then you square root both sides and get c= 9.25905 or about 9.26mi this is line AC in the triangle you drew the ship is 9.26 mi from the shore creating a third angle of 180-(28+90)= 62 degrees
