The Native Americans were not aware of what is happening. They were forcibly remove from their lands. The people were not afraid that their chief may have agreed with the Indian Removal Policy. They were forced to marched to the location of the West Cherokees. The US soldier was strict and mindful, in some essays. It states that the American soldiers were quite harsh to the Native. The Natives were forced to walk on the harsh winter season, young or old, the Natives were forced to walk. Unlike the others, the chieftain was heavily guarded considering the distance between him and the US soldier. I think the woman could be scared and tired. They had been travelling nonstop in order to reach their destination. The whole painting itself is an epitome of what happened to the natives when they were removed from their lands. They lost their homes and loved ones along the arduous journey towards north.
