The quadratic formula is given by

x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt[]{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

and the discriminant is the term inside the square root, that is, the discriminant d is given by

d=b^2-4ac

In our case, a=1, b=-1 and c=6. Then, the discriminant is

d=(-1)^2-4(1)(6)

which gives

\begin{gathered} d=1-24 \\ d=-23 \end{gathered}

therefore, the discriminat is equal to -23
