Hu Yaobang was a high-ranking official of the People's Republic of China. Throughout the 1980s, Hu supported a series of economic and political reforms, which made him undesirable for many party leaders. Following his death in 1989, small demonstrations were organized in order to commemorate his legacy. The day before his funeral, 100,000 students marched in Tiananmen Square, which led to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.
