Explanation:

To get the number of tape that can be cut from 2 1/ 4 , we simply divide 36 by 2 1/4

36 ÷ 2 1/4

but 2 1/4 = 9/4

36 ÷ 2 1/4 = 36 ÷9/4 = 36 × 4/9

=144 / 9

=16

Therefore, we can cut sixteen 2 1/4 m lengths of tape from 36m.
