Why can parallax only be used to measure distances to stars that are relatively close to earth?

Stars that are closer to us have larger Parallax. Stars that are farther from us show smaller parallax. The relationship is very exact. That's why Parallax can be used to measure the distance to a star. As you get farther Out The Parallax eventually becomes too small to measure.
