Modern art ended in the decade of 1970. It was slowly overtaken by events during the late 1960s like the rise of mass pop-culture and also with the rise of anti-authoritarian challenges. A key year was 1968, which witnessed the Tet Offensive, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, and street demonstrations throughout the capitals of Europe. As Modernism began to look increasingly old-fashioned, it gave way to what is known as "Contemporary Art" - meaning "art of the present era".
