The main causes are
Militarism- strong military (competition)
Alliances- help from others can make you more powerful, the blank check etc.
Imperialism- brought them resources
Nationalism- proud to fight for their country ( high morale)

Militarism: Is the belief in building up strong armed forces to prepare your country for war!
Alliance System: Countries agreed to support one another in the case of an attack from other countries.
