Marine scientists have previously measured the weight of a wide-ranging fish to be 9.0 lbs with a standard deviation of 0.35 lbs. A sample is taken off the Atlantic and has an average weight of 8.2 lbs. Explain how to conclude if the sample is unrepresentative of the population.

Given:
Actual: 9.0 lbs with standard deviation of 0.35 lbs
sample: 8.2 lbs

standard deviation means that the fish caught should be within the range of 8.65 and 9.35

9.00 + 0.35 = 9.35 lbs
9.00 - 0.35 = 8.65 lbs

The sample that had an average weight of 8.2 lbs is not a representative of the population because its weight goes beyond the standard deviation.
