Since the ratio is 1:4, the total, 40, is a multiple of 5 times the value of each part of the ratio...

Each part of the ratio is then valued at 40/5=8 so the ratio of 1:4 applied to a total of 40 is

1*8:4*8

8:32

1/5 x 40 = 8

4/5 x 40 = 32
so, therefore, 1 is 8
and 4 will be 32
to check, 8+32 = 40
